Meet Asaliah ‘Azi’ Mugnier from Switzerland
So, what made you want to come to England to study English?
I wanted to study English because I want to travel. Also, English is the world business language and so is always useful and maybe I will try to be a stewardess, so it is good to speak it. England is the best place to study because I wanted to be in a country where people speak English and England is the nearest to my own country. In England I am also close enough for my mum to come and visit me – I am in England for 8 months.
Was England as you expected?
I think the country – yes, but the people are more friendly than I expected. For the food – that was also nicer than I expected! It was very nice. I expected bad weather and I wasn’t disappointed! I visited a lot of places, castles, cathedrals, churches, old towns, but my favourite trips were to natural places of beauty.
How was your experience of living with an English family?
I really enjoy my host family, they were very cheerful and the children are very noisy! It is a very vibrant house and I will miss them when I leave. I think it is very helpful to speak with the children and to always hear English.
What’s the most memorable moment of your time here in England?
I enjoyed a lot, the trip to Durdle door because it was an amazing view and it is not the same to see it in a picture as it was in reality. The trip to London was really interesting; I was in Camden Town and I did a lot of shopping and I had my picture taken with my friend in traditional wild west costumes – it was great fun and exciting!
Is there anything you’d like to warn other students that are thinking of coming to England about?
The weather! Despite this, you will have an unforgettable experience. British etiquette is different – they are very polite, they say please and thank you a lot and they say sorry all the time! The food is very different to home as well, which can be a problem for some people.
