Meet Melanie from Switzerland
So, what made you want to come to England to study English?
Many reasons. First I like very much this language. Also, I’ve always lived in Geneva with my parents, so I wanted to see another culture.
For my job I thought it would be useful. People around me, like my colleagues and boss, encouraged me to come. It’s also useful for travelling in the future.
I wanted to come to England (rather than America, etc), because it’s the “real” English! Also the distance between Switzerland and England is short.
Was England as you expected?
It’s quite like what I expected. If anything it’s better than I expected. But the food is different!
How was your experience of living with an English family?
I love so much my host mother! I have just a host mother, as her sons are gone. It’s different for everyone. Her job is a counsellor and so she has good advice! She’s very funny and likes to laugh. We have conversations about all kinds of things. She cooks very well! When I first arrived we went on a walk and one evening we played with her son and a couple of other people.
What’s the most memorable moment of your time here in England?
For my birthday my host mother prepared a big party for me. She said we would have a games evening. She prepared cakes and games and other students came round. The other student who lives in the same house as me invited my other friends from the school to come. My host mum put up decorations in the house. It was so surprising and unexpected!
Is there anything you’d like to warn other students that are thinking of coming to England about?
It depends on the people. You can miss your food maybe. I took some Swiss chocolate with me! Maybe bring food with you.
It depends on how long the students are here… it’s harder to learn English than I thought, so it’s better to stay longer to improve your English. When I arrived it was difficult to understand people, but after about 2 months it started to click.
I have really enjoyed my stay in England so far and especially in CELC. I had such a good time! It was like a dream for me. The people I’ve met are so nice and so friendly, and it’s so warm-hearted. The ambience is like a family and I really like this. And they are really devoted to make you feel like at home. I will never forget!!
