Meet Renata from Germany

So, what made you want to come to England to study English?
I wanted to improve my English and I was at Celc Summer School last year and I really enjoyed the school, the teachers, students, the programmes and the trips, etc!  I would have gone back to Summer School again, but I’m too old so I decided to come here to the main school instead!
I really enjoy meeting people from other countries and at the school there are lots of people from other cultures and nationalities.
Also, I’m very interested in history and culture and wanted to learn more about England and the people here.

Was England as you expected?
The main difference is that in Summer School we all lived in residence together, whereas here we live with host families. So here we get to know more English people and see their lifestyle more. Another difference is that here (at the main school) we are much more independent – we can choose which activities we want to do (or not). There’s also a lot more free time compared to summer school. I’ve really enjoyed seeing some of the same teachers and students here at the main school who were at summer school last year. When I arrived here some of the memories from last year came back to me, which was really nice! Also, I wanted to come back to this area again as I really liked it last year! I’m very glad I came back again!

How was your experience of living with an English family?
Very good! My host family is very kind. They are all very welcoming. When I arrived they said “Make yourself at home!”. Whenever I come home they always ask me about my day and are interested in me. I can always ask them questions when I have them, including questions about the differences between my country and England. They’re also interested in my life back home in Germany.
The food is very good! It’s easy to communicate too, so if I’m out in the evening I just tell them so that they don’t cook a meal for me that day.
I have more free time here, so I spend some time with my host family (for example, I watched some World Cup football matches with them which was really funny!) and some time by myself doing my own thing.

What’s the most memorable moment of your time here in England?
That’s difficult to choose! I’ve enjoyed being together with the other students and the community. I’ve enjoyed spending time with the other students and talking about our different countries and cultures. I’ve also really enjoyed the trips to the different cities and countryside!!
There’s not just one special moment – it’s everything all together that’s made it such a good time!
Is there anything you’d like to warn other students who are thinking of coming to England about?

I would advise other students to do as many of the activities as they can so that they can see as much of the country as possible and get to know as many other students as possible! Don’t stay at home on social media all the time! Take all the opportunities you can while you’re here!
